Fall Landscaping in Houston Starts Before the Season Shifts
Although we are in the middle of summer, it is time to begin planning for fall landscaping in Houston before the season shifts. Here are a few things we suggest keeping in mind for your property as you think ahead.
Preparing for Fall Landscaping
1. Mulch & Soil Health
Fresh mulch makes a real difference once temperatures start to drop. It protects roots from temperature swings, holds onto moisture as rainfall becomes less predictable, and slowly improves the soil underneath as it breaks down.
2. Turf Management
Your lawn’s needs shift as the seasons change. Aeration helps relieve compacted soil, lighter watering prevents common fall turf disease, and mowing adjustments strengthen roots before winter.
3. Fertilization
The timing of fertilization directly impacts how turf handles the winter. As summers wind down, so should regular feedings of nitrogen-rich fertilizer, since pushing new growth too late leaves turf more vulnerable. In early fall, a lighter potassium-rich application can help roots store energy and toughen up before the cold sets in.
4. Pre- and Post-Emergent Weed Control
Most weed control happens too late, after weeds are already visible. A pre-emergent treatment applied early gets ahead of common fall weeds like henbit and chickweed before they ever take root, while a post-emergent pass can clean up anything that’s already there.
